In times gone by, many people were conditioned to avoid anyone out of the ordinary, so that such individuals felt even more isolated or socially excluded, especially with such things as mood disorders. As a result of this, many people felt like they were being outcast from normal society. Some encountered employment discrimination. Others might be shunned by members of their own family or friends. Often this merely aggravated the problem of depression, causing further mood swings and/or heightened more extreme forms of high anxiety. In recent decades though, many positive inroads have been made in understanding depression more fully, including those individuals suffering from clinical depression and bipolar disorders. Now it is generally speaking throughout the western world understood by near all medical staff to be a fully treatable condition. However, sometimes, getting that help is still not easy, why is that?

A mood disorder, a state of depression or bipolar disorder obviously cannot be categorised or diagnosed with a blood test or an x-ray into the state of a persons mind. Instead it is the case that through study of an individuals behaviour and thinking model over the course of often, many months, by a trained professional is one of the strongest precursors to coming to understand personally an individuals own condition and depressed state of mind. A number of symptoms must be present for a correct diagnosis to be reached. The problem sometimes can be too, that in the early stages of depression or mood disorder that close family and friends do not recognise the symptoms affecting the individual. Even when they are perceived or it is perceived that there might be a problem, often family or friends will hold back naturally enough, for fear of unduly upsetting their family member or friend or perhaps they are put off from reaching out to help, wondering if they themselves have reached the wrong conclusions, as everyone arrives at various conclusions differently.

Not only that, even when a family member or close friend thinks that they may be recognising the early warning signs, it may be nigh on impossible to convince the sufferer of depression that there is in actual fact a problem that may need some attention. Or if you are the one ailing from such feelings of depression, you may feel that it is not prudent to reach out for the help and assistance that deep down you know that you need. Perhaps you don’t want to trouble anyone or you are simply too embarrassed to bring up your depressed feelings to others for fear of rebuttal or worse, open ridicule. Nevertheless, if you are suffering from major depression, rather than allowing the problem to get worse day by day, you are going to have to take that step sooner or later to receive the help that you so desperately need and want. There are people available too that will not judge you for who you are and will do everything within their power to assist you, if only you reach out too, and ask for that help.

Naturally, everyone gets a little despondent at times and perhaps today with the economic climate and shaky job security, feelings of depression right now are on the rise drastically as so many are worried about their financial futures and looking after, not only themselves but also their families and other people that rely on them directly. It is little wonder that so many more people right now are suffering from the affects of depression. What if though the feelings of depression intensify more than a mere state of the blues? And what about if the feelings of depression continue over an unusual length of time? Also, if the depressing thoughts and feelings are affecting your everyday state of life and are stopping you from carrying out your normal everyday activities that you normally take for granted, what then? In such cases it is perhaps a wise decision to seek out any medical health assistance that you possibly can.

If the depression is just a biochemical imbalance, medication for the short term may be prescribed. In other cases counselling may be offered. In some situations both avenues have yielded positive results when both forms of treatment are used in balance, one with the other. The important thing is to reach out and to know when to ask for help rather than allowing the depressive thoughts to escalate to new heights where the depressive feelings can become even more so, much more difficult to manage correctly for you. There is no point in feeling ashamed of your feelings to the point that you feel that you cannot ask for help. Likewise, you may feel too frightened to ask for help. Sometimes you need to try your best to put these fears to one side and on a day when you do feel a little more positive, this time might be the best time of all to take that step and allow others to help you, whilst you are in this more positive state of mind.

It is true to say that not all cases of depression are a result of a wrong outlook on life, sometimes though it does have a bearing. One recent ten year study showed that depressed persons often interpret situations incorrectly. The depressed person feels lonely and sad because s/he erroneously thinks that s/he is inadequate and deserted, explains one psychiatrist.

So depressed people must work positively if they can muster the internal energy to correct their thinking before the symptoms of depression get worse. Pondering on negative things in life incessantly will not make an individual feel happy. If you feed the mind with unhappy sensations, violence, crime, low quality tv or other visual imagery which is damaging to people generally, you will of course be mindfully putting yourself in a situation where it is impossible for you to be happy. If you surround yourself with negative people and emotions on a personal level, this can rub off on you if you are not very careful. If you put yourself in a position of a negative bad atmosphere, it is hardly conducive to a state of well-being and personal happiness.

However, what you ponder upon in life, whether these be negative thoughts or positive thoughts, at times even with the very best of intentions, it can be very difficult to think ‘correctly’. All of us have our faults and it’s no good beating yourself up if at times you feel that you do not measure up to the high standards that you set for yourself or that others expect and demand from you daily. If you do feel that you are sliding down into depressing thoughts, depressing feelings or depressing emotions, try to quickly enact a positive strategy plan to stop those negative feelings from driving you down further in despair and hopelessness. Dwelling on negativity is not good for you. Cut it out, do something straightaway, go for a walk, pick up a good motivational book, read an inspiring story, go for a cycle ride anything you can to get yourself away from the negative situation. Don’t beat up on yourself, recognise the feeling and move on. Excessive feelings of guilt sometimes accompany depression. Just realize that everyone makes mistakes, you are not the only one feeling like this. Everyone has their faults and their strengths. Turn your perceived weakness into a strength and over time with patience and practice, you too could soon be not only combating your own depression, fighting your negative feelings but in doing so, you become a pillar of light and inspiration to others going through the same feelings presently.

Take a careful look at your diet. A chief probation officer in Ohio stated that many of the offenders assigned to her caseload also complained about feelings of depression. She went on to examine the diet of many of these individuals. She then found out that a very good number of them existed on junk food, many also had no regular eating patterns, only nourishing themselves at infrequent intervals throughout the day and in many cases during the night also. Many of them were obviously not getting the right kind of nutrients into their bodies, green fresh vegetables especially. A regular better diet she concluded could ave actually helped many of these persons not to be so depressed about their lives and she wondered if this directly or indirectly also had an effect upon their repeat offending behaviours. A balanced diet, with the right amount of vitamins and protein, coupled with exercise may well have helped positively many of these people to alleviate massively their feelings of depression. Given a proper diet at set meal times, many of the individuals in her care noticed a dramatic increase in their sense of personal self care and together with counselling, their overall outlook on life improved and their offending behaviour halted.

Authorities however do disagree on this, whether one’s diet can affect positively or negatively an individuals mood although looking at it from a commonsense point of view or position, it seems pretty obvious that a good nourishing, balanced diet would of course help a person suffering from depression. Also the kind of liquids that are consumed can have an effect, according to some mental health professionals. Drinking nothing but coke or coffee or other high caffeine drinks can again it is thought affect negatively in some circumstances a persons mood. Drinking pure water on the other hand was found to be very good for the mind compared to these quick fix high energy drinks. Other contributing factors which could possibly aid depression is the consumption of too many chocolate bars, crisps or other cheap forms of fast food. It is said often that what you eat makes you the person that you are. If you eat well, good food in a balanced manner this nourishes positively the body and the mind, if on the other hand you eat junk constantly, your body and mind respond in kind and in many cases a link has been established between the two, that if you go down this route, eating out of balance for what is good for you, dis-ease often sets in with subsequent feelings of depression as a result.

Fighting Depression

One of the very best things you can do when you feel drained of emotional energy, feeling depressed, down and out, suffering from the blues, feelings of low self esteem etc is to take on some exercise. Whilst not saying that all people that suffer from depression do not exercise or that only unfit individuals suffer from depression, exercise is a very positive thing to do for the mind, body and spirit, although of course this approach is not a one size fits all, model. For some, exercise is out of the question, but in the majority of cases, exercise really can help you on the road towards starting to feel more positive about yourself. According to Armand DiMele of the DiMele Center for Psychotherapy, “three quarters of people would find that their mood is lifted through exercise.” Others likewise concur their agreement on this, that to fight depression takes a multi pronged approach and exercise is a very positive thing for anyone with depressive feelings to consider taking up on a regular schedule. Proper rest and good natural sleep are also vital to combating depression successfully.

Some mildly depressed individuals are helped by setting aside time every day for conducting exercise and physical activities that they especially enjoy. One of the best sources of exercise to combat depression, fight depression is something that the majority of us take for granted, going for a good brisk walk. Another very useful and constructive way to fight depression is by getting creative. Take up a new hobby, painting for example whilst not exactly very hard work from an exercise point of view, is nevertheless proactively tackling your depressive feelings by giving you focus to draw your emotions out by giving them voice on the canvas. There are many other creative avenues you could try too.

Sometimes, all that is needed to control depression and nurture within more positive feelings is a change in your pace of life. For some people, they may at times need to speed things up a little bit whilst for other people, slowing down their lifestyle can assist towards the fight against depression. For others it can be a change of diet, eating foods which nourish not only the body but also the mind and the emotions or your spiritual self. Yet, what to do if the depressing thoughts and depressing feels continue to linger, what can you do then, to help get your mind and your perception of life back into a balanced state of being?

If you suffer generally from feelings of worthlessness and generally have a low perception of your real qualities as an individual, it could be that the cause of your depression is low self esteem. Low self esteem affects a huge number of individuals, you most certainly are not the only one that has a negative perception of yourself. Low self esteem and resulting depression can affect anyone from just about any walk of life, whether wealthy or not so wealthy, a so called privileged background or a working person.
For example, Suzanna became depressed after conflicts within her family environment. After suffering from years of put downs and ridicule, it is little wonder that she had built up around her her own wall to protect herself and her emotions. Within this protecting wall, Suzanna has terrible feelings of low self esteem. She concluded: ‘I am a bad person and cannot do anything right.’ This wasn’t good. If she was to properly analyze her feelings and her conclusions, how she reached these, she could have challenged these feelings of depression and negativity with sound reasoning, thus affecting her outlook upon herself more positively. Everyone has to recognise that they do some things right and they do somethings wrong. Life is just like that. Everyone makes mistakes. Recognising that other people are emotionally flawed too and seeing in ourselves that we can be too, it is by such mistakes in our thinking processes that we can further learn from life to move more positively forward. We must not blow our own feelings out of proportion. By keeping things in context, knowing and believing that you are a good person with some great qualities and personal attributes which can be and are very valuable to other people, we can make sure that no matter what others say at times, that our personal positive perception of ourselves stays intact.

Quite often though, especially when going through depression, manic depression or bipolar disorder it becomes all too easy to listen to that inner voice within ourselves which criticises us for everything, telling us that everything we do is wrong. Listening to that self imposed message, is it any wonder that at times, individuals may feel so low and depressed? Perhaps it might be time for us to challenge directly the validity of such feelings within ourselves and to see whether they really are true or not. Quite often you will find that this inner voice, that is causing us to feel depressed all the time really has no real and true validity at all.

Another depression victim going through bouts of low self esteem was Anthony, a 38 year old single parent of two boys. He said, “I was under immense strain trying to rear my two boys, I thought something must be wrong with me, that despite my best efforts, I wasn’t giving them everything I could as a single parent, these feelings snowballed to the point where I was so overwhelmed by feelings of negative, depressed feelings and my sense of self esteem plummeted, so much so that I ended up hospitalized for a short while, I just wish I had opened up to someone much earlier, what I was going through.” Talking about your feelings with someone you can trust really is a very positive, proactive step in the right direction, by availing yourself the opportunity to share your feelings with others, your personal weight of responsibility will lift immeasurably under most normal circumstances freeing you up to enjoy life a whole lot more.

Some individuals, you may be one of them, simply believe that they can stuff down their negative emotions altogether and avoid acknowledging them completely. If you do this, these negative depressing thoughts may just keep on returning back again and again until you recognise them for what they are and take the required steps to do something about them. Simply because they are negative depressing thoughts does not mean that they do not belong to you. Sometimes you have to recognise that within you, there are feelings going on which have to be tackled and in the end from recognising and acknowledging such negative thoughts, feelings and emotions, the positive pay-off, dividend for you, is that you grow into a stronger more positive person as a result.

Of course, sometimes the last thing we want to do to ourselves is recognising within ourselves problems that we don’t want to face, we’d much rather they simply just went away, however, that niggling depressive thought may just be there for a reason, enabling you to see it for what it is and thus in dealing with it the final result is that you grow into a stronger individual.

If you can confide in someone you really trust, whether this be a member of your family or a very close friend or a mental health counsellor, just unloading sometimes everything within you, can help you enormously on the road to recovery from depressive thoughts, feelings and emotions. For many this can just be the trigger that they need. Obviously it helps if the person that you confide in is a very good listener and can demonstrate empathy and support with what you are going through. If done properly, in a safe, caring environment, offloading your thoughts, feelings and emotions can be a tremendous relief.

So, if depressed, seek out an empathetic individual in whom you can trust your emotions to be given the respect that they fully deserve. One of the essential tools of combating depression is having someone with whom you can share all of the ups and downs of life with, for life itself is not always an easy ride, there will be from time to time, tribulations and personal anguish that you feel the need to work through.

Putting your feelings into words is part of the healing process of getting over depression. There is no point in denying yourself the right to happiness, denying yourself the right to feel loved, needed and wanted. False pride, wanting to have a undaunted-by-adversity appearance to others can only inhibit your future personal growth and your right to enjoy as much of life as possible. Sometimes it can also be that we only want to hear what we really want to hear, without taking on board more mature counsel to tackle the problem of depression or negative feelings and emotions. By sharing your feelings with someone you really trust however, in an emotionally safe environment really can lift the weight off your shoulders.

This is one of the things that we often truly appreciate about our really close friends or family members, that is having the ability to talk frankly and openly with each other, that is exactly what friends are for, to not only help you enjoy life in great company but also to pick you up when you feel down or emotionally low. Often confiding in a good friend, family member or mental health worker experienced in the field can put everything into a proper perspective. So rather than avoiding such encouraging counsel given, rather try to take at least a few of the suggestions offered and try to look at the problem of depression from another viewpoint, who knows, whilst not always, it can be that at time’s in doing so, you will be feeling much more chipper very shortly afterwards for opening up and taking about the reasons why you are feeling so low. If going through emotional strain, your friends and family can often be the best sources of encouragement.

Winning the battle against depression does not mean by a long shot that you will never ever suffer a bout of depression ever again. It is a sad part of life at times that sadness itself is just as much a part of life just as happy emotions are also a part of life. Yet we can learn to skillfully redirect the blows of sadness and depression which can assist you personally to deal with depression that much more effectively.

Of antidepressants, a doctor will often prescribe these. Depression antidepressants are designed for the purpose of addressing the imbalance of the chemical makeup of the mind, stopping the dis-ease in it’s tracks. Coupled with other preventative depression mechanisms such as counselling or initiating positive thinking exercises, depression antidepressant drugs can also in some situations, not all, provide a good platform to start the recovery process of individuals suffering from depression.

It must be understood that antidepressants on their own are not always successful, there can be with some individuals troubling side effects using antidepressants. The way I say it is that at times there no point to be gained, no advantage in simply smothering a problem, which antidepressants can do for some individuals, without addressing the actual root causes of the depression.

In other instances, herbal remedies may do exactly the same job as antidepressants, for example St Johns Wort is just one example as well as some bio-natural herbal remedies on the market. Talking over the best pharmaceutical products can either be carried out with your doctor or natural health practitioner.

What is Depression? A Depression Advice Guide

What is depression and what can you do about depression? This depression advice guide seeks to put together some depression advice tips and guidance on dealing with depression and winning the fight against depression.

A proverb from the bible states this, “By skillful direction you will carry on your war.” In a nutshell, this is saying that skill, not just good intentions alone are needed to win the battle against depression. Back in the mid 1980′s a study was carried out amongst individuals suffering from depression and found that some tried to cope with their symptoms of depression by, ‘taking anger out on other people, reducing the amount of tension caused by depression by drinking more, eating disorders and the taking of illegal substances and drugs.’ The result of this approach naturally enough is simply more depression and more physical symptoms of depression.

Depression typically can cause what may be considered under normal circumstances rather unusual tactics to solve the problem of depression. Often people fail to seek help for depression for fear that they may be perceived as being weak characters or individuals. The truth is however that major depression is not a sign of either mental weakness or a weak character. Depression really can and does affect countless millions of people right across every social background and cultural heritage, in fact it would be pretty fair to state that almost no-one is immune to depression at some point in their lives. If you are suffering symptoms of depression, you most certainly are not alone and nor will you be the last person to suffer from depression and there is a lot of help for depression out there if only you will ask for that help.

Recent research into depression shows that this severe disorder may exist at times when there are certain chemical abnormalities going on within the brain chemistry and this can be put down to many, many factors. In fact, not all instances of depression are caused solely by one’s own personal feelings or thinking processes, sometimes depression can be caused by outside factors too. Referring back for now though to the assumption that chemical imbalance may be the root cause of depression, let’s examine the following. Since a physical illness may be causing the depression, if you have been suffering from the symptoms of depression for a fortnight or more, going to your doctor or medical health practitioner may be advisable. If there is no physical ailment aiding the depressive feelings, sometimes the disorder can be treated with some simple depression counseling to adjust one’s own natural thinking processes. At times, a simple prescribed medical drug can be administered on a daily basic to affect positively the chemical imbalance which is causing the depression. Or a change of diet may simply be causing depression and again this can be solved by talking with the right kind of medical professionals operating within the field of depression study.
