Food For Thought

Take a careful look at your diet. A chief probation officer in Ohio stated that many of the offenders assigned to her caseload also complained about feelings of depression. She went on to examine the diet of many of these individuals. She then found out that a very good number of them existed on junk food, many also had no regular eating patterns, only nourishing themselves at infrequent intervals throughout the day and in many cases during the night also. Many of them were obviously not getting the right kind of nutrients into their bodies, green fresh vegetables especially. A regular better diet she concluded could ave actually helped many of these persons not to be so depressed about their lives and she wondered if this directly or indirectly also had an effect upon their repeat offending behaviours. A balanced diet, with the right amount of vitamins and protein, coupled with exercise may well have helped positively many of these people to alleviate massively their feelings of depression. Given a proper diet at set meal times, many of the individuals in her care noticed a dramatic increase in their sense of personal self care and together with counselling, their overall outlook on life improved and their offending behaviour halted.

Authorities however do disagree on this, whether one’s diet can affect positively or negatively an individuals mood although looking at it from a commonsense point of view or position, it seems pretty obvious that a good nourishing, balanced diet would of course help a person suffering from depression. Also the kind of liquids that are consumed can have an effect, according to some mental health professionals. Drinking nothing but coke or coffee or other high caffeine drinks can again it is thought affect negatively in some circumstances a persons mood.  Drinking pure water on the other hand was found to be very good for the mind compared to these quick fix high energy drinks. Other contributing factors which could possibly aid depression is the consumption of too many chocolate bars, crisps or other cheap forms of fast food.  It is said often that what you eat makes you the person that you are.  If you eat well, good food in a balanced manner this nourishes positively the body and the mind, if on the other hand you eat junk constantly, your body and mind respond in kind and in many cases a link has been established between the two, that if you go down this route, eating out of balance for what is good for you, dis-ease often sets in with subsequent feelings of depression as a result.
