What is depression and what can you do about depression? This depression advice guide seeks to put together some depression advice tips and guidance on dealing with depression and winning the fight against depression.

A proverb from the bible states this, “By skillful direction you will carry on your war.” In a nutshell, this is saying that skill, not just good intentions alone are needed to win the battle against depression. Back in the mid 1980’s a study was carried out amongst individuals suffering from depression and found that some tried to cope with their symptoms of depression by, ‘taking anger out on other people, reducing the amount of tension caused by depression by drinking more, eating disorders and the taking of illegal substances and drugs.’ The result of this approach naturally enough is simply more depression and more physical symptoms of depression.

Depression typically can cause what may be considered under normal circumstances rather unusual tactics to solve the problem of depression.  Often people fail to seek help for depression for fear that they may be perceived as being weak characters or individuals. The truth is however that major depression is not a sign of either mental weakness or a weak character.  Depression really can and does affect countless millions of people right across every social background and cultural heritage, in fact it would be pretty fair to state that almost no-one is immune to depression at some point in their lives.  If you are suffering symptoms of depression, you most certainly are not alone and nor will you be the last person to suffer from depression and there is a lot of help for depression out there if only you will ask for that help.

Recent research into depression shows that this severe disorder may exist at times when there are certain chemical abnormalities going on within the brain chemistry and this can be put down to many, many factors. In fact, not all instances of depression are caused solely by one’s own personal feelings or thinking processes, sometimes depression can be caused by outside factors too. Referring back for now though to the assumption that chemical imbalance may be the root cause of depression, let’s examine the following. Since a physical illness may be causing the depression, if you have been suffering from the symptoms of depression for a fortnight or more, going to your doctor or medical health practitioner may be advisable. If there is no physical ailment aiding the depressive feelings, sometimes the disorder can be treated with some simple depression counseling to adjust one’s own natural thinking processes.  At times, a simple prescribed medical drug can be administered on a daily basic to affect positively the chemical imbalance which is causing the depression. Or a change of diet may simply be causing depression and again this can be solved by talking with the right kind of medical professionals operating within the field of depression study.
